MANILA, Philippines – The city government of Mandaluyong will round up children loitering in the streets begging for alms, especially those who board public utility jeepneys, Mayor Benjamin Abalos Jr. said yesterday. The goal is for there to be no children loitering on the streets or begging for alms before Christmas Day, he said. Abalos also warned parents said they can be penalized for allowing their children to loiter outside their homes during the curfew hours of 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. under Ordinance 538 or the Code of Parental Responsibility.

MANILA, Philippines (6th UPDATE) – A blaze struck a residential area in Mandaluyong City early Wednesday afternoon, November 25, affecting an estimated 800 to 1,000 families, city officials said. "This is the biggest fire in the history of Mandaluyong," Mandaluyong Mayor Benjamin "Benhur" Abalos Jr said in an interview with dzBB at Barangay Addition Hills, the site of the fire. The fire, which began in Block 32 of Barangay Addition Hills at around 2 pm Tuesday, spread to 5 other blocks a couple of hours later. The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) said that the fire was declared under control at 6:13 pm. It was declared fire out past 10 pm.

More than 12,000 people have officially crushed the Guinness World Record for the largest Zumba class ever to dance. The event, which took place on July 19, was organized by the city of Mandaluyong in the Philippines and was part of Mayor Benhur Abalos' birthday celebrations. Abalos, who recently won a United Nations Public Service Award, launched a health care program that encourages a healthier lifestyle, Guinness said.
